I am not artsy enough for this movie
Mar. 28th, 2026 01:43 pmI mean, moment by moment it was interesting, and engaging, and the kids were great? It's a couple with three kids, the couple are divorced but still pretty involved with each other (including occasional sex), he's out working on a fishing boat much of the time and she lives with the kids and her dad and is an artist. But, it starts with them divorced but still bound up with each other, and it ends with them divorced but still bound up in each other, and it seemed to me that at least a couple of years went by (judging by what we see of the changing seasons, although IMDb says it's one year) but the kids never age or go to school or indeed see any human being other than their family (except for a brief medical thing), and it's sort of magically weird (e.g., dad kills one of the family's roosters because it's supposedly become aggressive and is then -- in a dream, presumably? -- himself savaged by a giant rooster) and I have no idea whether the way it ends is real-world plausible, or another dream sequence, or just plain bananas.
the ending
Because of the injury to one of the kids that prompts the medical thing, dad is going to leave his fishing boat mid-fishing trip and come home. But instead of the boat either interrupting its work returning him to shore or rendezvousing directly with another boat that can bring him home, he's plopped into the ocean in a flotation suit and just drifts in the open sea, waves washing over the emergency light blinking on his chest, for at least a full day and night, waiting for the other boat to arrive and pick him up. And he's still drifting, occasionally screaming, as the movie ends. Is he screaming because the other boat hasn't shown up and he's going to die there? Is this a remotely plausible way for him to be transferred from one boat to another? I mean, I freely admit I know nothing about commercial herring fishery, but it seems awfully risky. Is it another dream sequence? I have no clue.As we left, we were saying bemusedly to each other, "Did anything ever . . . happen? In that entire film?" and other people leaving the theatre laughed and echoed the question.
I mean, critics apparently like it, and I guess real life can be like that (except for the seven-foot rooster), but I think I'm not artsy enough for it. I want plot.
Heated Rivalry the book
Mar. 27th, 2026 07:24 amGood stuff.
we are one, but we are many
Mar. 27th, 2026 04:25 pmfrom the bloody tides of war,
I am a storm-tossed seeker
Of a welcome peace-filled shore.
My children will not learn the speech
Their ancestors did tongue
But in this land of hope they will
become Australian
I sought an education
respected through the world,
I yearn for opportunity
to see my thoughts unfurl
This land accepts my knowledge
My work beneath the sun
And here in mind and body I'll
become Australian.
head injury
Mar. 27th, 2026 11:10 amtl;dr I got it checked out, and scans, and no concussion or symptoms, but I'm taking it easy
I had a sore head with a lump, no blackouts or dizziness, definite swelling. Got the neighbour to take me to the doctor, then to the station so I could go get it scanned - ultrasound and CT. Haematoma (ie. blood swelling) but no significant injury that they could spot.
Still no dizziness or blackouts, no memory loss (that I can tell) and everything seems fine so far. I'm still typing.
That said, today, my right side is all achey - I've been having issues along the outside hip, involving stiffness of the muscle - it gets better after movement, but for the duration of the stiffness, it's not fun. Now, my right hand and right foot are feeling tingly. I have a bunch of very marginal neural issues on the right side of my body, so this has probably just exacerbated it. Either way, it's not fun.
Luckily the Edible Garden Trail is done so far as hosting is concerned. I'm planning to go out on the trail with a friend tomorrow - I have a plan, but it's fairly extensive so we'll see how we manage going along. Could be good, could be a problem. I'm going along with the woman I invited over for Christmas Day lunch - she seemed pretty happy to come along and visit gardens, so that'll be nice.
The main issue of going on the Trail is probably going to be petrol and driving. Through Sydney city and inner west, it's going to be just a wee smidge rough.
Although, interestingly, today I went to the doc for the follow-up on the scans. (Everthing's fine.) And although it was lunchtime on Friday there was almost nobody at the cafes next to the station. That's unheard of. I suspect a lot of people aren't eating out as often - which wasn't the case during COVID. The city businesses suffered then, but I suspect that with everyone pulling back from excessive spending, we're going to see a lot of local business going out as well...
*sigh*
Finally got paid via the new payroll company, as well as the 'catchup' pay that I missed out on at the start of the month. Phew.
--
And in other money news...
stories about my father
...well, not quite. Dad is coming to Sydney in April. Probably. If a Sydney client will pay him. He's been waiting for four months for this client to pay him, though... It's eternal optimism with him. And, honestly, I understand the hope, but also...I'm kind of like, "Could you not have just made nice quiet money the way your wife was doing back when you met her? Basic real estate stuff? Did you have to get glamourous and intiative-driven and foward-thinking?" Oh Dad.
I just want to shake my head at my dad. I love him but...

Anyway, it is Friday, I have just finished work. It is the weekend, and I suppose I should try to do some writing, but on the writing front I have been absolutely awful. I have to rewrite the Final Confrontation of Book 1 again - finally found the plot notes for it...
So close! SO CLOSE!

Did I mention the new chickens we got? We got two, one died, we got another two, and the three are hanging out together pretty happily. Except that we just had a cold snap (went from 25-30C days down to 15-20C days like that) and while they're doing okay-ish outside, we're bringing them in at night.
...Actually, I wonder if we could stick them all in the one cage. We were keeping them separate so we could tell whose shit was whose (for a while we thought they might be experiencing the same issue that the other chick died of) but it's just coccidiosis, which we're treating with special water. And they're not so large that it's impossible to fit them all in one cage overnight right now. Hm. It's a thought.
Right. Time to rest up.
(no subject)
Mar. 26th, 2026 01:06 pmIt's not new -- not liking photos/videos of myself has been the case for a while -- but it hasn't come up much because I don't really do mirrors. But I'm taking progress pictures of my ear, and a) it looks horrible; b) I'm still adjusting to how much of the ear had to go (only like 1/5, but more than the hole-punch taken from my nose ten years ago, which needed no reconstruction); and c) my throat makes me look like a bullfrog (I tend towards double-chin-ness anyway because my head is fixed at a slightly downward angle, but it's super puffy lately because of the submandibular flareups I've been getting)
At least I have cute shirts and cute earrings ...
SlasHeaven is Moving to AO3!
Mar. 25th, 2026 08:00 pm
SlasHeaven, a Spanish-language slash fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).
In this post:
- A bit of background explanation
- What this means for creators who had work(s) on SlasHeaven
- And what to do if you still have questions
Background explanation
SlasHeaven was founded on May 19, 2004, by the programmer and main promoter of the archive, Ayesha, and two collaborators, Maryam and Aura. This began after a massive deletion of fanfiction slash written in Spanish at a popular platform and with the conviction that we needed a place where we could publish in our language without restrictions. And so this website was born, a place dedicated exclusively to slash fanfiction written in Spanish.
SlasHeaven’s archivist made the decision to move the archive to AO3 after web configuration issues made it untenable to continue maintaining the archive themselves.
The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Maryam and Aura to import SlasHeaven into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, any fanart currently hosted by SlasHeaven will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.
We will begin importing works from SlasHeaven to AO3 after March. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.
What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on SlasHeaven?
We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.
All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.
Please contact Open Doors with your SlasHeaven pseud(s) and email address(es), if:
- You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
- You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
- You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
- You would NOT like your works moved to AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
- You are happy for us to preserve your works on AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
- You have any other questions we can help you with.
Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your SlasHeaven account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the SlasHeaven mods to confirm your claims.)
Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:
- importing your works to AO3
- adding your works to the new collection SlasHeaven
If you still have questions...
If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.
We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of SlasHeaven on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.
We're excited to be able to help preserve SlasHeaven!
- The Open Doors team and Maryam and Aura
Commenting on this post will be disabled in 14 days, on April 8, 2026. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments regarding this import after that date, please contact Open Doors.

One of my neighbors asked if I'd started planting yet, and I said I wished it was warm enough to bring things out because I'm running out of room inside. He said, "Your thumb is too green."

Daphne and I went to the park tonight and the sun was very kind. The weather was nice enough that she didn't have to wear a coat, and she had a great time frolicking in the field at the top of the hill. And on our way down we were visited by the brightest sundog I've ever seen! Even my phone camera was able to capture some of the color.

Finally, I'm really enjoying Duolingo's new units on hiking.

Updates to "No Fandom" Additional Tags, March 2026
Mar. 23rd, 2026 04:39 pm
AO3 Tag Wranglers continue to test processes for wrangling canonical additional tags (tags that appear in the auto-complete) which don't belong to any particular fandom (also known as "No Fandom" tags). This post overviews some of these upcoming changes.
In this round of updates, we continued to streamline creating new canonical tags, prioritizing more straightforward updates which would have less discussion compared to renaming current canonical tags or creating new canonical tags which touch on more complex topics. This method also reviews new tags on a regular basis, so check back on AO3 News for periodic "No Fandom" tag announcements.
None of these updates change the tags users have added to works. If a user-created tag is considered to have the same meaning as a new canonical, it will be made a synonym of one of these newly created canonical tags, and works with that user-created tag will appear when the canonical tag is selected.
In short, these changes only affect which tags appear in AO3's auto-complete and filters. You can and should continue to tag your works however you prefer.
New Canonicals
The following concepts have been made new canonical tags:
- All Characters Are Of Legal Age
- Black Cat/Golden Retriever Personality Dynamics
- Cannibalism as a Metaphor for Love
- Canon-Typical Cannibalism
- Characters in Love
- Classism
- Cock Stepping
- Crotch Stepping
- Crying After Sex
- Dramatic Irony
- Established Friendship
- Fealty
- Fealty Kink
- Loyalty Kink
- Pain Kink
- Thigh Kink
- Frotting | Rubbing Penises Together
- Girls in Love
- Grumpy/Sunshine Relationships
- Happy Tears
- Mating Press Position
- Moodboards
- Muscular Female Characters
- Muscular Male Characters
- Consensual Omegaverse Bitching | Turning into an Omega
- Omegaverse Bitching | Turning into an Omega
- Omegaverse Studding | Turning into an Alpha
- Omegaverse Alpha Bitching | Alpha Turning into an Omega
- Omegaverse Beta Bitching | Beta Turning into an Omega
- Relationship Wingmanning
- Consensual Spanking
In Conclusion
While some of these tags may be tags and concepts you're intimately familiar with, others may be concepts you've never heard of before. Fortunately, our fellow OTW volunteers at Fanlore may be able to help! As you may have seen in the comments sections of previous posts, Fanlore is a fantastic resource for learning more about these common fandom concepts, and about the history and lore of fandom in general. For the curious, here's a quick look at a few articles about concepts related to this month's new canonical tags:
- Aesthetic Edit
- Alpha/Beta/Omega
- Cannibalism
- Domestic Discipline
- Friendship
- Grumpy Character and the Sunshine Character
- Loyalty Kink
- Sex Position
While we won't be announcing every change we make to No Fandom canonical tags, you can expect similar updates in the future about tags we believe will most affect users. If you're interested in the changes we'll be making, you can continue to check AO3 News or follow us on Bluesky @wranglers.archiveofourown.org or Tumblr @ao3org for future announcements.
You can also read previous updates on "No Fandom" tags as well as other wrangling updates, linked below:

For more information about AO3's tag system, check out our Tags FAQ.
In addition to providing technical help, AO3 Support also handles requests related to how tags are sorted and connected. If you have questions about specific tags, which were first used over a month ago and are unrelated to any of the new canonical tags listed above, please contact Support instead of leaving a comment on this post.
Please keep in mind that discussions about what tags to canonize and what format they should take are ongoing. As a result, not all related concepts will be canonized at the same time. This does not mean that related or similar concepts will not be canonized in the future or that we have chosen to canonize one specific concept in lieu of another, simply that we likely either haven’t gotten to that related concept yet or that it needs further discussion and will take a bit longer for us to canonize it as a result. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Lastly, we're still working on implementing changes and connecting relevant user-created tags to these new canonicals, so it’ll be some time before these updates are complete. If you have questions about specific tags which should be connected to these new canonicals, please refrain from contacting Support about them until at least three months from now to give us adequate time to do so.

but it's my destiny to be the king of fail
Mar. 23rd, 2026 03:09 pmAfter Ny's memorial I felt like a complete awkward pony; I talked myself down from an anxiety spiral with the very jadelennox-branded pep talk of, basically, "Stop being so damn full of yourself, kid, literally nobody is going to notice or remember how bad you were at personing in a room full of grieving people in shock, many of whom primarily know each other online. Nobody was looking at you."
Anyway I have heard from three different people, one of whom I see in person regularly, that I either didn't see them at all when they tried to talk to me, or I saw them and talked to them like they were strangers.
Honestly I think this is an achievement. Being so Not At My Best I was noticeably out of it even in a room full of people Not At Their Best. Awkward pony gold star!
